Our top 5 signs for Termite Activity

1. Discarded Wings or Swarmers

When a termite colony grows and matures, reproducing termites known as swarmers will leave their nests to find locations to create new colonies which unfortunately include our homes.  These swarmers will discard their wings near points of entries to your property as one of the first visible signs of a termite problem.

2. Mud Tubes

Sunlight and dry air can be harmful to subterranean termites, so they build mud tubes to provide moisture and shelter between their colonies and their food source.  These mud tubes are pencil-thin and can be found around the foundation of your home.

3. Peeling or Bubbling Paint

In addition to using mud tubes to protect themselves from sunlight and dry air, termites will also stay below the surface of the wood they’re consuming in what are called galleries.  These galleries often contain moisture brought by the termites to keep themselves alive which causes painted surfaces to peel or bubble.  Although peeling or bubbling paint isn’t always a sign of termites, it can be a sign of moisture that needs to be addressed.

4. Droppings

Termites produce a wood colored dropping also known as “frass.”  These droppings tend to be one millimeter in size or smaller and can resemble sawdust or small wood pellets.  Make sure to check for these both inside and outside your home.

5. Wood Damage

Termites food source is the wood that makes up our homes so they can cause extensive damage to wooden materials throughout our houses.  Because termites eat wood from the inside out it can be hard to find visual evidence of damage outside of blistering wood.  One way to check for wood damage is to tap on the areas you think might be affected.  If this wood sounds hollow, then you may have a termite infestation.
